It is not uncommon for your outdoor furniture to get rusty but it can be fixed quite easily. Here are some easy steps to make sure your patio furniture can stay with you another season.

Step 1

Remove the bigger pieces of rust from your patio furniture by using a wire brush. Sanding off rust is a good idea too. Alternatively, you can use a commercial rust remover. Once you’ve removed the rust, sand until the surface feels smooth.

Step 2

Ensure that the furniture piece is completely clean by using a solvent like acetone. Once the cleaning process is over, make sure your furniture is completely dry to prevent re-rusting.

Step 3

Now you need to prime your furniture. Use a high-quality rust prevention spray primer. Use 2-3 very thin layers of primer before the paint. It’s best to use a spray-based primer to ensure all the crevices are primed too.

For best results, use a white primer under lighter paint colors and a dark primer under darker paint colors!

Step 4

After the primer dries, spray on a high-quality oil-based onto the furniture. Apply a few thin coats. Ensure even coats by maintaining a consistent distance between the spray can and the furniture for each coat.

Step 5

Once the furniture is painted, it’s time to seal it. Use a sealer with UV protection to prevent fading. A clear oil-based urethane meant for outdoor use will be great.

Step 6

Let the furniture dry in a well-ventilated area. Now your patio furniture is refinished!
